Bach: Gamba Sonatas

Bach Gamba Sonatas

JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH (1685-1750)

Orfeo C 693 071A

Angela Hewitt’s first chamber music CD is with the brilliant young German cellist, Daniel Müller-Schott. Both artists were brought up on the music of Bach, and their collaboration in these wonderful sonatas is a joy to hear.

The three Gamba Sonatas are Bach at the highest level. Written originally for viola da gamba and harpsichord, they are here given a fresh reading on cello and piano while maintaining all the necessary elements of Baroque style. The CD also includes a fine Sonata by Bach’s son, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, which is both lyrical and technically demanding. This is the first CD of the Hewitt/Müller-Schott duo which is already beginning to perform around the world.

“(Angela Hewitt) has found a worthy colleague in cellist Daniel Müller-Schott…they arrive at a convincing consensus as to what the music has to say, but that is only their starting point. Playing to each other’s formidable strengths, they achieve something luminous, almost aching in its beauty and wisdom.” (The Ottawa Citizen)
